Please Don't Stop The Music

When I was young, I remember how my mom would use to tell me that this particular song was a big hit when she was still in 5th grade, or this was the song that my dad dedicated to her when they were still at their courtship stage. I know... pretty cheesy, and haha.. makes me laugh at my dad's suave moves on my mom, but I never fully appreciated how music can make us reminisce about a certain point of our life until I was older.

I guess you can say, I inherited my nostalgic inclinations from mom. Or maybe I'm just way too sentimental. But there are songs that make me zone out and it's almost as if I'm taken straight back to that time when I heard/enjoyed/related to that particular song. Here are a few of those songs that never fails to give me a nostalgic feeling and bring a thoughtful, often times bittersweet, smile to my lips.

Ever After - Bonnie Bailey - Now this one brings back so much happy memories. This was one of the tracks my girlfriends and I played during our spur-of-the-moment roadtrip a few years ago. One of our friend was leaving for Chicago in a few months, and we decided we need to hit the beach which was about 4 hours away from the city before she leaves. Whenever I hear this, it takes me straight to that day when the girls and I were enjoying the sunset and the beach all to ourselves.

The Takeover, Break's Over - Fallout Boy - This one takes me straight to when I was preparing for my Nurses' Licensure Exam. Whenever I hear this, all the anxiety, the fear, and my determination to nail that exam in one go washes over me. And when I look back, it makes me smile and appreciate myself at how I kept my focus and drive to pass that exam.

Superstar - Lupe Fiasco - I remember this was the song that was playing in the background whilst I was doing a vigil in front of the PC, waiting for the dreaded Licensure Exam results. I remember it was past 3am already, and he encouraged me to go to sleep as it was late, but being the stubborn Taurean than I am, I just smiled and stayed glued to my seat. Until finally it sank in, and I decided to go to bed and check back on the website the next day. And yes, I felt like a Superstar the next day, for I was on the list, Miss 14353.

Insomnia - Craig David - This one takes me back to that moment I was sitting inside the MTR in Hong Kong, travelling 40 minutes from my hotel in Tsuen Wan all the way to Grand Millenium Plaza in Sheung Wan. This is probably the longest train ride I've ever taken my whole life (in a foreign land), and I was all by myself! Ahh... the memories are so vivid, and this song was in full blast (to my eardrum's tolerable threshold, that is) as I took that journey.

3 - Britney Spears - Thing song always makes me burst into peals of laughter. My sister, my friends and I rented out a stall during the Christmas Bazaar at a local night spot in my city for the whole month of December. And one of our friends came over to visit and help us out. I remember him with his I-pod in full blast,  singing along with this song out loud! Haha, I can remember the annoyed looks from our fellow tenants, but my friend didn't give two cents about it. He just kept singing his heart out in his off-falsetto pitch.

Wedding Dress - Taeyang - This song reminds me of those crazy times my friends and I had in Australia. We saw a group of Filipino teenagers popping and locking to this song, and we were imitating them on the sidelines. Haha, oh my, how awkward our rendition was. Whenever we are all on Skype or conferencing over YM, this always comes up in the conversations and we do our little "Wedding Dress" goofy dance.

Teenage Dream - Katy Perry - Basically sums up the times I spent with my boyfriend. Those were the best times ever, and yeah, we were living a teenage dream. The bittersweet part though, is that this song takes me back to that moment when I had already checked in to the departure lounge, and he rang me up. He was on the other side of the glass as we spoke, and he we didn't hang up until it was time for me to board the plane. I wish I didn't have to leave, but farewells doesn't necessarily mean goodbye. We're still together, and in time, we will be back in each other's arms again, if all goes according to plan.

Do you have a particular song that takes you back to a certain event in your life?
Do share, I'd love to hear about it.

Hmmm a song that takes me back to a certain point in my life? I'd have to say a lot of chopin and mozart as I used to play the pinao and practice everyday. It reminds me of my hard work, the love I had to perform for others! I love Katy Perry and yes...teenage dream is definitely a cute song but I didn't have a bf then! So i was a teenager without a dream i suppose?

@Bravoe Runway: Oh yes, you were a classical girl! My mom would trade me for you any day, Bessie! She made me take piano lessons as a girl, but I played hooky haha and now I wish I took it seriously. And lol... it's never too late for a teenage dream, sis. My whole teenage dream happened last year, and I was far beyond my teens hahaha

Hey Wi! I want to say ChiChi! HAHA You're not the only one. Music takes me back to certain points in time too. Some can be great memories ( like a party or event) and some can be not so good (a reminder of a past boyfriend/relationship that didn't work) hahaha I love music and I think your dad is great and not cheesy at all. I wish more guys did this kind of thing today. Awesome post and thanks for sharing your thoughts! :D

@SassyUptownChic: you can call me ChiChi if you want, I go by a LOT of nicknames (christened by friends and family, not my choice lol) but ChiChi's my favourite cuz it's the name of my fave anime character when I was young(from Dragonball haha).
